presented by Pulang Maleta Collective
from Toronto

Five playwrights drawing from their distinct backgrounds in film, dance, poetry and music form the Pulang Maleta Collective and share their stories in their debut piece, BAGGAGE.

“Maria”- A woman’s struggle between filial obligation and the desire for a new life through a mailorder-bride arrangement.

“not my exotic”- Sunshine encounters a guy who is interested in a lot more than a one-night stand.

“The Edge of Family”- Crime, dinner and an envious mother exacerbate the decision of a young girl and her two men.

“Touch” – A young woman tries to navigate the world as a new lesbian. Her mentor, a Filipino drag queen, helps her try and find love and more importantly learn how to breathe.

“Claim Your Baggage” A humorous look at cultural shame and a reminder that if you don’t look back at where you came from, you’ll never get to where you’re going.

Electronic Press Kit is now available

After much hard work, our electronic press kit is now available online. To download parts or all of it, you can find it in our “Media” section here:

Production Stills are up!

Rehearsals for such a large company is practically a nightmare to schedule, but we still manage to get by. With a company of 27 people (yeah we’re atypical that way), I was amazed to get the turnout that I did for our production stills shoot.

Anyway, here they are. Enjoy!

More photos (and maybe promo video) to come! Oh and if you’re wondering who the models were for our initial flyer design… I’ve been sworn to secrecy. 😀

The Pulang Maleta Collective presents
BAGGAGE
A series of plays about what we carry and how we carry it

Written and Performed by Reese Baguio, Aura Carcueva, Vincent Galvez, Darrel Gamotin and Christine Mangosing

Directed by Karen Ancheta and Marie Beath Badian

Also Starring: Leon Aureus, Rose Cortez, Alex Felipe, Elizabeth Lofranco, Jessica Leibgott, Caroline Mangosing, Andea Mapili, Regina Simon and Michelle Turingan

It’s been weighed, tagged, lost and most importantly claimed. Baggage engages with cultural shame to discuss how what one carries affects a dutiful daughter’s struggle for independence, influences a young girl’s choices in love, changes pillow talk between a man and a woman more clothed than they realize, makes it impossible to just wipe the slate clean and threatens to leave a newly realized lesbian gasping for breath.

Baggage by the Pulang Maleta Collective began as a series of workshop plays hammered out in the basement of the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture for the second annual Flipside Festival. Participating in Fringe’s Bring Your Own Venue Program, the collective mounts Baggage at 167 Augusta Av. in Kensington Market where it all began.

The Pulang Maleta Collective checks Baggage at the TORONTO FRINGE FESTIVAL from Wednesday July 2, 2008 until Sunday July 13, 2008. Tickets are $10. Call the Fringe Hotline at 416.966.1062 to purchase advance tickets. Performances are weeknights at 8pm and weekends at 2:30pm.

Performance Times:
Wed, July 2 8:00 pm | Thu, July 3 8:00 pm | Fri, July 4 8:00 pm | Sat, July 5 2:30 pm | Sun, July 6 2:30 pm |

Flyer

I’m very excited to present our initial flyer run as designed by the talented Leon Aureus, with creative assistance from myself (photography) and Christine Mangosing (photo post processing). It seems that everyone in the company, in true grassroots style, wears multiple hats… just maybe not so many hats in this photo… ahem.

Pulang Maleta Collective presents \

We’re @ Crosscurrents

All members of the Pulang Maleta Collective are being featured at a special staged reading at Crosscurrents on Saturday, May 10th @ 2pm.

Plays by all the PMC writers previously featured in “Tales from the Flipside” are being read in the session labelled “Flipside Keeps Current”. So if you want to see what we’re up to, come on out. It’s PWYC at the Factory Theatre.

It’s an excellent preview to what’s coming up for our Fringe show!

We have Directors!

The Collective is pleased to announce that we’ve contracted two amazing directors for “Baggage”. We welcome to the fray, Karen Ancheta and Marie Beath Badian. Both are familiar faces to the Pulang Maleta Collective as they’ve each helped birth the production in different ways: Karen as the original director/dramaturge for Christine Mangosing’s “Claim Your Baggage”,;and Marie Beath as the Director of Play Creation for the Carlos Bulosan Theatre where all our plays originated.

We’re very excited to be working with such amazing people heading into the Fringe.
